Dental Package

Dental disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats.

Did you know that 99% of all animals have some level of dental disease by the
age of 2?

By having regular dental check-ups and dental cleanings, dental disease can be
prevented.

Without treatment your pet may suffer:

  • Severe, prolonged pain
  • Jaw fracture, tooth loss
  • Chronic infections causing heart, liver and kidney disease, often leading to premature
    death
  • Thyroid disease and diabetes
  • Osteoporosis

What are some signs of dental disease?

  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Excessive salivation
  • Yellow, brown or black accumulations on teeth
  • Red or swollen and bleeding gums
  • Decreased appetite, difficulty eating (may only eat soft food, may drop food from mouth)
  • Often, there are no signs at all!

Did you know?

One in three dogs has a fractured tooth!

A fractured tooth or even a worn tooth is like having 40,000 exposed nerves!! This
would be like a 6 inch hotspot!!

10% of all animals have horrible, painful cavities!

What causes dental disease?

  • Plaque, tartar & calculus accumulate
  • This accumulation leads to infection & gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)
  • Gingivitis leads to gum loss and periodontal disease

What is periodontal disease?

  • Inflammation or infection of the gums and bone surrounding the tooth leading to tooth
    mobility and loss
  • Infection at the root forms pus and foul odors, leading to abscesses
  • Once started, these permanent changes to the tooth, gums and bone cannot be reversed

If gingivitis is allowed to persist untreated, then irreversible periodontal disease
will occur.

Imagine if you didn’t brush your teeth for years and years……

What happens during a dental cleaning?

  • Cleaning with hand and mechanical scaling, and an ultrasonic scaler (cleaning is done
both above and below the gum line)
  • Periodontal probing to check for and measure pockets under the gumline
  • X-rays can be taken to show infected or broken teeth
  • Polishing to smooth the surface of the tooth
  • Lavage (deep rinsing) to remove debris and other irritants
  • Fluoride therapy • Dental charting and treatment planning

The tartar and plaque beneath the gum line causes significant gum recession.
